As it is a multi player game, the player has to apply the proper defence system on village so that it can be saved from an attack of other clans (players).  Here are some of the common types of defence systems which have their own weakness abilities.

Cannons 

Cannons are the first defence system which player gets in the starting. It is rather slow but has a fine attacking range & effect. Basically, cannons are made to defend other defence systems like mortar, towers and so on. This is because cannons are perfect in blocking attacks of giants from attacking the defence systems of the village. These are cheap and can be easily upgraded. In addition, they can only attack on land unit, not on the air unit like dragons.

Archer Towers

But, it is good in case of any sudden attack as it can attack again & again over the target with less delay, hence, protects other defence systems like mortars.

Apart from above defence systems, clash of clans has many more. Some of these are only available at higher levels. A player has to spend its resources like gold, elixir or dark elixir to construct such defense systems.
